We all know that nutrition labels usually list the ingredient that is used the most first. In this case, the ‘tomato concentrate’ is used the most. And for some, it sounds pretty healthy.
However, tomato concentrate is a fancy term for ‘tomatoes that have been heavily processed and contain no nutritional value.
Ketchup Ingredient Label:
Tomato concentrate from red ripe tomatoes, distilled vinegar, high-fructose corn syrup, corn syrup, salt, spice, onion powder, and natural flavoring.
Health Disadvantages of Ketchup: Why is Ketchup Bad for You?
1. High Fructose Corn Syrup
Additionally, high fructose corn syrup contains mercury not regulated or measured by the FDA. In 2009, two studies performed in the United States found that,
“Mercury is toxic in all its forms. Given how much high-fructose corn syrup is consumed by children, it could be a significant additional source of mercury never before considered. We are calling for immediate changes by industry and the [US Food and Drug Administration] to help stop this avoidable mercury contamination of the food supply,” the Institute for Agriculture and Trade Policy’s Dr. David Wallinga, a co-author of both studies, had warned.
Tomato Ketchup is loaded with sugar. It contains 23.6 grams of sugar per 100 grams. According to the American Heart Association, the maximum amount of added sugars you should eat in a day is (for men) 37.5 grams or 9 teaspoons and (for women) 25 grams or 6 teaspoons per day. (Negative Effects Of Sugar)
3. Distilled Vinegar
Distilled vinegar, the second highest ingredient on the list, is also made from GMO corn. A lawsuit filed in 2014 stated that Distilled Vinegar was not all natural but was made from genetically modified corn, which is grown with toxic pesticides and chemicals.
No Nutritional Value Whatsoever: Ketchup does not contain nutrients, fiber, or protein. There may be traces of tomato paste in the ketchup, but that does not make it even somewhat healthy. It’s full of GMOs, sugar, and even possibly mercury, a heavy metal that is extremely toxic to the body.
